Maybe someday I’ll make it to QuiltCon. So until then I have lived vicariously through others via social media. This year the Best in Show had my attention. An amazing example of paper piecing. However, the image itself is curious to me. First, there is the fact that it is a derivative image of a sculpture in South Dakota. I did not realize that Quilt Con allowed designs that were based on existing artworks. The sculpture itself has mixed reviews as it was not created by a Native artist. Chatter on the internet as been light about this topic. Personally it peaked my interest because it raises questions about who depicts people of origins other than their own as well as who profits from them. I’m not claiming to have any answers on this and notice that the quilting corner of the internet is rather quiet about this topic which I find interesting.
